The Algonquin Bats dropped their second straight game to open the season with a record of 0-2 after being shut out by the Marauders, 10-0, on Sunday at Emricson Park in Woodstock, Ill.
Maruaders pitcher Leo Jordan surrendered only 5 hits with no walks and 6 strikeouts. The Bats never got a runner past second base as the game was halted after 6 innings due to the 10-run rule.
The Bats looked rather anemic at the plate most of the day. Mike Anagnostopoulos’s sixth-inning line drive to right field was the most solid hit the Bats had all day. Tony DiBlasi had a single up the middle in the third inning while Dan Kuksa and Ron Skrabacz each had infield singles. Skrabacz also had a seeing eye pop single down the third base line in the sixth.
The “one big inning” curse continued to plague the Bats as they surrendered 6 runs in the second inning to fall behind, 7-0. Four of those runs were unearned as starting pitcher Matt Weiss became the latest Bats pitcher to fall victim to the curse.
Bill Quoss came on in the third inning in relief of Weiss. The southpaw worked two scoreless innings, including working out of a one-out bases-loaded jam in the fourth, before allowing 3 runs in his third inning of work.
The white washing was the Bats first shutout since 2012 when they were shutout four times. Their last shutout came 41 games ago.
The Bats next game is Sunday, May 3 at 12:30 p.m. against the Grays at Plote Field in Lake in the Hills, Ill.
