Bats Strike Early; Hold On For 2nd Win

Saturday, July 6 (WEEK 12)

The Bats jumped on the Grays for 3 runs in the first inning and that was all they needed as they went on to defeat the Grays, 7-2, Saturday evening at Plote Field in Lake in the Hills.  The victory improved the Bats record to 2-6-1 while the Grays fell to 4-6-1.

Rookie Mike Anagnostopoulos put the Bats on the board in the first inning with a one-out bases loaded single to drive home the first run.  One out later Bill Quoss delivered a 2-run single to left field to increase the lead to 3-0.

Starting pitcher John Moulchin faced only 3 batters in three of the four innings he pitched to pick up the win.  He struggled slightly in the third inning when the Grays loaded the bases with two outs and scored a run on a walk.  Moulchin then fanned Mike Tiegs, the Grays number three hitter, to end the inning.  The hard-throwing right hander pitched a scoreless fourth to secure his second win of the season.

The Bats answered the Grays run with 2 more of their own in the third when Bob Gurchak and Moulchin delivered consecutive two-out singles to build a 5-1 lead.

The final Bats runs came in the sixth inning when Ken Kozlik stroked an opposite field double down the left field line followed by Gurchak's second RBI single of the evening to give the Bats a 7-1 advantage.

The Grays put together a small rally in the last inning scoring an unearned run off reliver Bill Quoss, but it was too little, too late.  The Bats defense kept the Grays at bay throughout the game as center fielder Tim Scotellaro and third baseman Denny Prosperi each turned in a couple of sparkling web gems. Winning hurler Moulchin also helped his cause in the second inning by turning a hard line drive back through the box into a double play.
