The Algonquin Bats built up an early 8-0 lead over the Grays but failed to close the deal in a 16-14 Opening Day loss at Jacobs High School.  Despite rapping out 21 hits, a combination of walks and poor fielding turned a potential rout into a nail biter.

Right-hander John Moulchin held the Grays scoreless in the first two innings and was rewarded by his teammates with plenty of offensive support.  The Bats put up 5 runs in the bottom half of the first inning on 5 hits, including RBI singles from Randy Harris, Don Gragnani, and newcomer Chuck France. They got 5 more hits in the second inning, led by a 2-run single by manager Tony DiBlasi and an RBI hit by leadoff man Tim Scotellaro, to take an 8-0 lead.

Ken Kozlik pitched a scoreless third inning with 2 strikeouts, while Darryl Eanos pitched the fourth surrendering 1 run on 2 hits and a walk.  Meanwhile the Bats failed to score in the third and fourth innings, leaving 5 runners stranded in the process, but still held a comfortable 8-1 lead.

The Grays, however, refused to go down without a fight.  A 6-run fifth inning put them right back in the contest
