A 5-run sixth inning propelled the Bats to a 12-10 win over the Grays at Jacobs High School in a game called after six innings due to the 2 1/2 hour time limit. The Bats (6-4) increased their division lead to 2 1/2 games over the second-place Angels who lost earlier that morning to the Grays (1-9). It was the Grays first win of the season.
The Bats took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI triple by Bruce Marchionda, and a ground out by Dave Krizanovic to drive home Marchionda.
Southpaw Bill Quoss held the Grays scoreless for the first two innings, but 3 Bats errors and a lost fly ball in the bottom of the third inning led to 4 runs (1 earned) for the Grays and a 4-2 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning a 2-run single by Randy Harris and a long sacrifice fly by John Moulchin put the Bats back on top, 5-4. Moulchin's fly ball to right field was held in the ball park by a stiff wind, giving turncoat Larry Barnes (playing right field for the short-handed Grays) a chance to camp under the ball for the catch.
The Bats tacked on 2 more runs in the fifth for a 7-4 lead, thanks once again to the tandem of Marchionda and Krizanovic. Marchionda, voted the Bats #1 Star of the Game, singled and stole second, then scored on Krizanovic's line drive single to left. Krizanovic later came around to score on a Darryl Eanos single.
Quoss held the Grays scoreless in the fourth inning and looked to be in the driver's seat before surrendering 3 hits to open the fifth.
